Summary
The procedure described makes possible the rapid separation of complex mixtures, such as essential oils, into 5 fractions of different polarity. Since the individual fractions contain less components than the total sample, a better gas chromatographic separation is achieved. This is of particular importance when packed columns are used for subsequent identification of the individual components by means of MS, NMR, and IR spectroscopic procedures. At the same time, the information gained on the polarity of the individual compounds facilitates interpretation of the spectra and provides additional evidence of identification.
