Outer-sphere ligand-exchange chromatography with copper-loaded macrocyclic-bonded silica column

Summary

The synthesis of a cyclam (1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclo-tetradecane)-bonded silica is described. The effect of pH, ionic strength and methanol content of the mobile phase on the chromatographic behaviour of the stationary phase when loaded with Cu(II) has been studied. Retention is observed only for compounds whose net charge is negative at the pH used. This selectivity proves to result from outer-sphere ligand-exchange chromatography. The separation of isomers of amino benzoic acid and of acidic derivatives of indole have been achieved.
