Summary
The effect of travelling wind disturbances on a rectangular bay of uniform depth is investigated. The disturbances are represented by square wave pulses travelling along the bay with a given width and a given speed of propagation. The effects of bottom friction and earth's rotation are ignored. The dynamical equations are solved analytically using the method of characteristics and the results are presented in terms of the maximum water level fluctuation at the closed end of the bay as a function of the speed and the width of the disturbances.
