Summary
This paper examines the nature and causes of the recent drought in the West African Sahel with particular attention paid to the Nigerian situation. Various measures which could be taken to combat the menace of drought are discussed. It is stressed that any effective drought containment plan for the area must not only be comprehensive and well integrated but must also be geared towards maintaining a satisfactory ecological balance between the land resources of the area and its human and animal populations.
