Summary
The casting of “semi-velvet” antlers of a red deer stag above the coronet is discussed in view of the possible neural control of hormone receptors in the target tissue. It is speculated that the partial mineralization of only the distal part of semi-velvet antlers may be ascribed to the inadequate activation and saturation of testosterone receptors in the proximal part of the beam. Whether the local activation of the distal part of the antler is due to the low testosterone level, as is the case in cryptorchids, or wether it may also be a consequence of a lack of testosterone receptors, remains to be elucidated. In contrast, the full peruke of a roe buck appears to be the consequence of a deactivation of the testosterone receptors, the origin of which is unknown.
