Summary

In a study of 287 ulcer patients over the age of 60 (15.9% of all ulcer patients admitted to one hospital unit during an 11-year period), gastric ulcers were more frequent than duodenal, and two-thirds of the cases occurred in males. Among ulcers which remained active after the age of 60, only 42% had their onset before this age; the others were of more recent appearance. The frequency of complications increased in elderly patients and after the age of 70 there were more cases with complications than with pain only. The increased mortality in ulcer patients over the age of 60 is attributed to the increased number and seriousness of hemorrhagic complications.
