Histopathologic findings in giardiasis: A biopsy study

  • Published:
The American Journal of Digestive Diseases Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Summary

Twenty-five patients with giardiasis were submitted to duodenal and/or jejunal biopsy. Other intestinal parasites that usually inhabit the small bowel were present in 20.

The trophozoite of Giardia lamblia was found either among the mucous threads adherent to the mucous membrane or close to the membrane itself in the tissue sections of 7 patients. In 5 patients, the parasite was located in a jejunal specimen. In another, it was found both in jejunal and duodenal specimens. In the remaining case, the site of specimen was not identified.

No other specific abnormality related to giardiasis was found. Minor pathologic changes such as partial villous atrophy and an apparent increase in the size and number of the goblet cells as well as in the number of mitoses of the intestinal epithelium were found in some patients.

The authors discuss the significance of these findings which, in some instances, could be related to the action of other parasites infecting their patients.
