Conclusions
1. The findings in early endoscopy in a series of patients with acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding of undetermined source are presented.
2. The value of a vigorous diagnostic attack is stressed.
3. A negative endoscopic examination is important in that a subtotal gastrectomy, as an emergency procedure, would almost invariably remove the source of upper gastrointestinal bleeding in those patients who continue to bleed.
4. The safety of flexible esophagoscopy, in contrast to rigid esophagoscopy, is stressed.
