Summary
In a rectangular channel wind-produced internal and inertial waves are studied. The energy of the wind field within the internal wave range is approximated by a single wave having a period of 10 hours. If the wind field is smooth in the basin, the produced current distribution is also smooth. In order to produce internal waves the Fourier amplitudes of the wind field, at wave numbers corresponding to internal waves, must reach about 10% of those at small wave numbers. The amplitude of the internal waves depends on the eddy viscosity distribution. Contrary to internal waves inertial waves can be produced by any time-dependent wind field. The energy of inertial waves is considerably higher than the energy of internal waves. They are, therefore, the dominating fluctuation in current records.
