Summary

Combinations of effects of chlorpromazine with those of various levels of drive and habit on the lever-pressing response in the rat were studied in a factorially designed experiment. Twenty-seven white male albino rats served as subjects. Variations in drive level were obtained by “prefeeding” subjects different amount of water before testing, and in habit level by giving them varying number of training sessions. The results indicate that over-learning and high drive level attenuate the effects of chlorpromazine, and that, drive and habit seem to combine with each other in an additive fashion in influencing the drug effects. These results were interpreted to supportPayne's hypothesis with regard to the combinations of the effects of drive and training level with the effects of depressant drugs on learned behaviour.
