Summary

The emergence and seedling growth of cv. S. 24 perennial ryegrass plants was significantly reduced by two waterlogging treatments in a glasshouse environment. These adverse effects of temporary waterlogging were alleviated by coating the seed with calcium peroxide. This oxygenating agent did not enhance or reduce seedling establishment when the soil medium was not waterlogged. Calcium peroxide did not affect the germination of coated seeds when placed on wet filter paper.

The establishment of plants in contrasting soils, which experienced water tables close to ground level at two upland field sites, was also improved by coating perennial ryegrass seed with calcium peroxide. Alleviation of the detrimental effects of excessively high water tables was not observed in plants which were established from seed coated with calcium carbonate.
