He specializes in the sociology of contemporary social structures from the perspective of youth problems, such as crime, juvenile delinquency, non-attendance and bullying in school, on which he has written extensively. A member of the Research Committee on Behaviour Problems in Schools, he is the Chairperson of the National Survey on Bullying under the auspices of the Japanese Ministry of Education, and the Director of the Japanese Association of Sociological Criminology, the Japanese Association of Victimology and the Japanese Association of Social Problems.
