Summary

Proton magnetic resonance spectra of benzene solubilized to saturation in deuterium oxide solutions of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and of trimethyldodecylammonium chloride were examined. The benzene signal did not shift until the surfactant concentration reached the critical micelle concentration, when it then began to shift abruptly. With a further increase in surfactant concentration, the signal shifted asymptotically to a definite position. The same phenomenon was observed with hydrogen oxide solutions of SDS.

The shift of the benzene signal is discussed and interpreted in terms of the exchange of benzene molecules between surfactant micelles and water. From this standpoint, the lifetime of the benzene molecule in a micelle can be estimated from the broadening of the signal. This is evaluated to be 10−4 second or less for a benzene molecule in an SDS micelle (saturated with benzene).
