Sommario

Summary

Examples are considered which explain the discrepancy between the theoretical predictions and experimental observations of the shape of the elastic-plastic boundary for the torsion of a solid circular cylinder. Effects of local inhomogeneities in yield strength and of small corrugations in the boundary of the circular section are considered. Both effects produce qualitative agreement with experimental observation. The roof-membrane analogy for elastic-plastic torsion is the device used to examine these effects. It is necessary to prove that the analogy is valid for the particular examples where inhomogeneities are considered. Theorems are established relating to this case.
