Summary

The morphological and physiological data which indicate relations between neurosecretory cells and endocrine glands in the Arthropoda are briefly summarized. The corpora cardiaca of insects, the sinus glands of crustaceans and the cerebral glands of chilopods are anatomically connected with protocerebral neurosecretory cells; the secretory product of these cells can be demonstrated in the organs, as well as a second secretory material producedin situ. The functions of the corpora cardiaca and those of the sinus glands are controlled by the protocerebral neurosecretory cells (pars intercerebralis in theinsecta Pterygota, paired frontal organs in thethysanoura, X-organs in thecrustacea malacostraca). The innervation of the corpora allata of insects is also furnished by neurosecretory cells, but the functional connections are less clear. The secretory rhythm of the prothoracic glands of holometabolous insects is controlled by the protocerebral neurosecretory cells, and the ventral glands of theInsecta Paleoptera are anatomically connected to neurosecretory cells lying in the suboesophagal ganglion.
