Summary
The action of ouabain in concentrations from 10−4 M to 10−7 M on the reaction between actomyosin and ATP has been investigated in both native extract and washed actomyosin from beef heart. The glycoside has a stimulating effect on myosin-ATP-ase, but inhibits the activity of ATP-ase in native muscle extract containing both water soluble and myosinbound ATP-ase. Furthermore, ouabain causes a change in the recovery phase of the viscosity curve, the extent of which depends on the Ca++ concentration.
