Summary
The effect of carbon monoxide upon oxygen consumption and ion absorption in wheat roots has been studied. In the dark, inhibition of respiration by CO (in sufficiently high concentrations) is nearly as great as the maximum inhibition in cyanide. Similarly, the chloride absorption is strongly inhibited. Inhibition of respiration and ion absorption by CO is light-reversible.
