Abstract
Kossmat's division into the Saxothuringian and the Moldanubian zones has essentially been accepted. The characteristic features of the Moldanubian zone is the presence of nonmetamorphic Lower Palaeozoic rocks which are distinctly separated from their Upper Proterozoic basement. The Precambrian of the Moldanubian zone has a polycyclic character showing a high variability of lithofacies. The rocks were affected by Assyntian metamorphism of Barrovian type, and by Variscan metamorphism of Abukuma type. The Assyntian granitoids have been confirmed by K/Ar age determination.
