Summary
Normal endsystolic volume of left ventricle, as reported by several authors shows considerable differences in respect to both, relative (V r /V d ) and absolute values.
Using dye-dilution and thermodilution technics for recording ventricular volumes in anesthetized dogs we found a good correspondence between the two indicator dilution methods. Under the conditions of our experiments methodical source of error seems to be little (heat exchange between blood and vessels as far as thermodilution is concerned, influence of artificial suction of blood from the aorta in using the dye-dilution method).
For estimating the endsystolic volume variations of hemodynamic conditions (frequency, systemic pressure and ventricular inflow), caused by the different methodical circumstances have to be respected by all means.
Our mean results:V r 47% ofV d at frequencies lower than 100 bpm,V r 49% ofV d at rates higher than 120 bpm show a fairly good correspondence to the results of other authors (Table 1, page 107) and have their place in the middle area between extreme estimations.
