Summary
A total of 1172 new entries into the Gatersleben collection, 576 spring and 566 winter wheat varieties (table 1), was tested with the following ten races ofErysiphe graminis tritici: races 3, 7, 12, 15, 16, 17, 18, 22, 34 and 39. Thirty-six spring wheat varieties (3 per cent of the total) proved to be resistant to all of these races (table 3). Resistance to some of the races was shown by 52 spring and 23 winter wheat varieties or by about 6 per cent of the total (table 4). Mixtures of resistant with susceptible plants were found in 24 samples ofT. aestivum L. and one ofT. durum Desf. More than 88 per cent of this collection was classified as susceptible.
