Summary
The ultrasonic absorption of aqueous solutions of ionic soaps has been measured at 25° as a function of frequency, concentration and paraffin chain length of the soap and nature of the counterion. The measurements show the existence of a single relaxation process in dilute micellar solutions and of two relaxation processes in concentrated micellar solutions. A systematic study of dilute micellar solutions shows that the relaxation frequency is a linear function of the soap concentration and that the effect of the paraffin chain length on the absorption is much more important than that of the nature of the counterion. From the discussion of the data it appears that the observed relaxation process results from equilibria between micelles and free soap molecules rather than from association-dissociation equilibria between micelles and counterions as postulated byYasunaga et al. The second relaxation process which is only present in concentrated solutions is thought to be due to changes in micelle shape.
