Abstract
The injection to mice, by intraperitoneal way, of purified patulin, extracted from culture filtrates of a toxigenic strain ofAspergillus clavatus, induces symptoms similar to those observed in naturally intoxicated cattle by ingestion of forage plantlets naturally infected by the fungus.
The histopathological observation shows congestives lesions in miscellaneous organs, neuronal degeneracy at the level of cerebral cortex.
A direct action of patulin on the nervous centers seems not to be involved: the intracerebral injection of 0.2 mg of toxin does not produce abnormal symptoms in treated animals.
