Summary
This investigation deals with quantitative increases in protein content within young seedlings ofSinapis alba L. upon exposure to light. The photoreaction responsible for these changes has been identified with the photomorphogenic reaction system by the following criteria:
-
a)
The increase in protein under continuous red illumination can also be attained by repeated short exposures to red light when appropriate dark period intervals are given.
-
b)
This red effect can be reversed by far-red.
-
c)
Under continuous illumination far-red is more effective than red.
The dark period has been shown to play an important role here, for the size of the measured effect depends not only on the wavelength, illumination time and intensity, but also on the length of the intermittent dark periods. Furthermore, certain evidence is presented whereby it appears that red and far-red illumination react differently to the dark period. The significance of these findings has been discussed.
