Summary
Plasma 11-hydroxycorticosteroid levels were measured fluorometrically during anaphylactic shock of guinea pigs.
Whereas in the acute anaphylactic reaction elicited by i.v. injection of antigen, no increase was observed, a highly significant rise of plasma corticosteroids was found in the so-called protracted shock.
Pretreatment with theα-receptor blocking agent, phentolamine, reduced the plasma corticosteroid levels in the protracted shock significantly. Antihistaminics, and propranolol, had no inhibitory effect.
