Abstract
Formulating goals that will be endorsed by the staff of a psychiatric hospital is a challenging task. In the present study, staff members at a state hospital rated the importance of organizational goals to people working in a facility such as their own. Results showed that different groups of staff members held different opinions. For the hospital studied, the goals staff members supported appeared to be considerably influenced by their different roles in the hospital. Such a divergence of opinion poses distinct problems for administrators, particularly if disagreements occur around issues that are central to the mission of the institution.
