Summary
-
1.
Naked protoplasts from different plant objects were made to expand gradually until their plasma-membranes burst.
-
2.
The upper limit of the plasma-membranes' expansion-capacity seems to be about 200 % of the normal surface-area. This indicates that the following thicknesses and types of continuous lipoid membranes, pictured byDanielli (1936), are possible: Either type 1f and two layers of lipoid molecules, or type 1 b and four layers of lipoid molecules.
-
3.
The plasma-membrane contains a fixed amount of substance which cannot be increased or diminished by compelling it to expand or contract.
