Summary
In normal cerebrospinal fluid no, or in exceptional cases only a very slight creatinine-kinase activity is demonstrable; values exceeding 0.1 IU definitely are pathological. An increase in the creatinine-kinase in the cerebrospinal fluid occurs in severe progressive diseases of the central nervous system, regardless of the special diagnosis, most frequently in tumours and hydrocephalus with a progressing course. The creatinine-kinase values in the cerebrospinal fluid show no correlation to the values in the serum and to the total amount of protein in the cerebrospinal fluid. The isoenzyme pattern of the creatinine-kinase in the cerebrospinal fluid corresponds to that of the brain tissue. The findings lead to the assumption that creatinine-kinase passes from the central nervous system into the cerebrospinal fluid in various diseases which are concomitant with changes in the cell permeability.
