Summary
Vertical sections were taken of clinically normal skin before and 4 days after treatment with a cream containing fluocinolonacetonide (0,025 and 0,1%). Both normal and treated skin were kept under a plastic film.
All cells that were in the DNA-synthesisphase were marked by incubation with3H-thymidine and their number and position were determined in histological sections.
After fluocinolonacetonide treatment the number ofS-phases in normal epidermis was much reduced, as had previously been found to an even greater extent in psoriasis vulgaris treated in the same way.
This result in normal skin supports the theory that when psoriasis is suppressed by steroids normal keratinisation becomes possible because the cells live longer. If the cells move too quickly towards death there is not sufficient time for full differentiation.
