On the reflection of Rydberg atoms from a liquid helium surface

Abstract

The reflection of highly-excited (Rydberg) atoms from the surfaces of negative electron affinity materials (such as liquid helium, liquid and solid hydrogen, neon, and others) has been studied. It is shown that in some cases thermal Rydberg atoms can be efficiently reflected from such surfaces. The criterion of such reflection is established. The potential applications of the effect are also considered.
