Abstract
Hybrid necrosis is the premature gradual death of the foliage in certain hybrids. It is based on 2 complementary genes. For each of these loc a multiple allelic series has been found. The alleles differ greatly in the degree of necrosis they bring about (expressivity). The number of dominant alleles (gene dosage) also affects the degree of necrosis. The size of the gene dosage effect appeared to be closely connected with the expressivity of the necrosis loci, the greatest effects occurring in moderately necrotic crosses. A third genetic determinant of the necrosis degree is the genetic backgroud. An interaction between genetic background and gene dosage effect was demonstrated by the finding that after a few generations of selfing, starting from one F1-plant, populations may result with different more or less constant gene dosage effects. This result is explained by different recombinations of backgroud genes, which become fixed during the course of selfing.
