Summary
The dependency of absorption of glucose and galactose on the concentration of the perfusion fluid was studied under the condition of continuous perfusion of the rat small intestine in vivo. An exact deviation from absorption by simple diffusion was obtained for low concentrations, only. A direct relation between the concentration of glucose (or galactose) in the perfusion fluid and the amount absorbed was observed with higher concentrations of the perfused glucose and galactose solutions. Therefore, it was not possible to confirm the existence of a complete substrate saturation as an important fact of active absorption. It is possible to raise the absorption of glucose without changing the glucose concentration by increasing the osmotic pressure in the intestinal lumen.
