Cytological behaviour of some inter-specific hybrids in the genus Solanum, sect. Tuberarium

Summary

  1. 1.

Instances of the function of unreduced gametes (egg cells and pollen grains) in tuber-bearingSolanum species are given.

  2. 2.

Meiosis was studied in the 48-chromosome F1 plants of the crossS. phureja×S. tuberosum and in the 36- and 48-chromosome F1 plants of the crossS. tuberosum×S. chacoense. The 36-chromosome hybrids were sterile and showed several meiotic abnormalities. The 48-chromosome hybrids were fertile, showed a rather regular meiosis and gave, according to preliminary observations, fairly uniform F2 progenies.

  3. 3.

The possible modes of pairing in these hybrids are discussed with special reference to the basic chromosome number in the genus.

  4. 4.

It is suggested that the available evidence is not sufficient to warrant the assumption that the basic number is 6.
