Gangliocytoma: Operability and follow-up

Summary

Nineteen follow-up studies of patients with gangliocytomas, mainly in a temporal (7 cases) or parietal (6 cases) localisation, were carried out. Of the 6 patients who were operated on between the ages of 20 to 30, 4 had, at least for a time, a job similar to or better than the one they had held before the operation. An operation seems to be indicated if the partially calcified tumor is relatively superficially located, especially in the classical temporal localization, and if, as in 14 out of 18 of our cases, the tumor is clearly demarcated. Three of our patients suffered no disturbances of speech after removal of tumors from the left hemisphere, while in the 4th case even an amelioration of the speech defect took place.

Zusammenfassung

19 Patienten mit den sehr seltenen Gangliocytomen überwiegend temporaler (7 Fälle) und parietaler (6 Fälle) Lokalisation wurden katamnestisch verfolgt. 6 Fälle mit einem Operationsalter um das 20. bis 30. Lebensjahr ließen bei durchschnittlich 15jähriger Beobachtungsdauer in 4 Fällen eine zumindest vorübergehend gleichwertige oder verbesserte Arbeitstätigkeit erkennen. Eine Operationsindikation scheint dann gegeben, wenn der in den meisten Fällen feinstrichig verkalkende Tumor relativ oberflächlich liegt, vor allem in der klassischen temporalen Lokalisation, und wenn er, wie in den meisten (14 von 18) Fällen, relativ gut abgegrenzt ist. 3 unserer Patienten mit links temporaler Lokalisation bekamen keine Aphasie, in einem Fall trat Besserung der Sprachstörungen auf.
