Treatment of primary epidermoid carcinoma of the anal canal

Conclusion

Many questions have been raised by the success of the combined modality programs and some of these will be resolved by proposed multicentre clinical trials and by laboratory investigators. From a practical point of patient management, however, it seems reasonable to treat patients with epidermoid anal canal carcinoma by local excision when the appropriate criteria for conservative resection are present, and otherwise by combined modality therapy or by radiation alone. Radical resection would then be reserved for the management of residual or recurrent cancer, and of treatment related anorectal toxicity.
