Impact of topical metronidazole on the skin and colon microflora in patients with rosacea

Einfluß topischer Metronidazolanwendung auf die Mikroflora der Haut und des Kolon bei Patienten mit Rosacea

Summary

20 patients with rosacea were treated with a 1% metronidazole cream b.i.d. for one month. Sixteen out of twenty patients improved. The skin and intestinal microflora were studied before, during and after treatment. Topical metronidazole did not cause any significant changes in the microflora. No side effects were observed.

Zusammenfassung

20 Patienten mit Rosacea wurden einen Monat lang zweimal täglich mit einer 1%igen Metronidazol-Creme behandelt. Bei 16 der 20 Patienten trat eine Besserung ein. Vor, während und nach der Behandlung wurde die Mikroflora der Haut und des Kolon untersucht. Die topische Metronidazolanwendung verursachte keine wesentlichen Veränderungen der Mikroflora. Nebenwirkungen wurden nicht beobachtet.
