Summary
The tissue diffusion of cefadroxil in comparison to cephalexin was studied in 50 patients undergoing tonsillectomy after oral administration of 1 g of one of the antibiotics. The serum and tissue concentrations of cefadroxil remained at a high level for a distinctly longer period of time than those of cephalexin. The concentration of cefadroxil in tonsil tissue of 3.5 µg/g after 150 minutes was approximately threefold that of cephalexin of 1.1 µg/g (p<0.01). After 300 minutes the concentration of cefadroxil was still as high as 1.6 µg/g in tonsil tissue, whereas the cephalexin concentration had dropped to an average value of 0.1 µg/g. In view of its longer serum half-life, better tissue penetration and longer period of retention in tonsil tissue, cefadroxil would appear to be clinically superior to cephalexin which has the same antibacterial spectrum.
