Summary
Human erythrocyte glycoproteins represent the MN and the Pr1/Pr2 antigens. MN and Pr1/Pr2 are determined by terminal N-acetylneuraminic acid of these glycoproteins. By periodate oxidation of red cell glycoproteins resulting in neuraminic acid with shortened polyhydroxy side chain, the Pr1 and MN antigens are inactivated. In contrast to this, the Pr2 antigenicity is strongly increased.
