Phytoferritin associated with yellowing in leaves ofCocos nucifera (Arecaceae)

  • Published:
Protoplasma Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Summary

Aggregates of phytoferritin particles have been observed by electron microscopy in chloroplasts of leaf pinnae from the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera L.) which have yellowed due to senescence, lethal yellowing disease, scale insect infestation, or physical damage. Phytoferritin was not found in green pinnae from the same trees. We conclude that phytoferritin is a breakdown product associated with disruption of chloroplast structure and photosynthetic activity inCocos nucifera and is not specifically associated with disease.
