Elastic scattering of positrons by argon atoms

Abstract

The variational static approximation is applied to the elastic scattering of low-energy positrons by argon atoms. A trial function including up to 10 terms is taken to allow for correlation, depending on the positron-nucleus separation only. This method excludes singularities and succeeds in improving the calculated phase shifts. Three versions have been applied depending on the way of inclusion of polarization effects. Results of the phase shifts and cross sections agree with other theoretical calculations as well as experimental values. Our version (ii) yields the best agreement with experiment.
