Longitudinal waves in a linear viscoelastic material

Abstract

It is shown that if a plane longitudinal sinusoidal wave, for which the planes of constant phase and constant amplitude are the same, can propagate in a linear viscoelastic material, then the direction of energy propagation is not, in general, normal to these common planes, as it is for an elastic material.

Zusammenfassung

Es wird gezeigt, daß dann, wenn eine ebene sinusförmige Longitudinalwelle mit zusammenfallenden Phasen- und Amplitudenebenen in einem linear viskoelastischen Material sich fortpflanzen kann, die Richtung der Energiefortpflanzung im allgemeinen nicht wie im elastischen Material normal zu diesen Ebenen ist.
