The use of mueller matrices in the intensity methods of birefringence measurements

Abstract

The use of the 4×4 matrices characterizing the individual elements of the experimental arrangement for the analysis of the birefringence measurements of optically uniaxial compounds with rotationally symmetrical ellipsoid of normals has been demonstrated. The method used allows the determination of the effect of orientation of the individual units on the resulting retardation and shows that the retardation can be determined also if circular polarized light is used.
