Contents
Part 1 of this paper deals with general aspects of a phenomenological theory describing the interaction of electromagnetic fields in lossless dielectrics. Starting from an energy balance, equations of motion and general constitutive relations are derived by means of invariance requirements. The problem of a universal force expression and the relations between different models are discussed in the appendix.
Part 2 will be concerned with applications to the description of electro-elastic and elasto-optic phenomena.
