On the nature of crying and weeping

  • Published:
The Psychiatric Quarterly Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Summary

The nature of crying has been reviewed from the physiological, psychological, psychoanalytic and sociocultural approaches, focusing on the development and significance of tears in relation to the expression of affect.

It is suggested that the development of tears in weeping may be linked to the development of object relations in the infant and thereby becomes involved in separation anxiety and grief reactions.
