Summary
A method is developed which allows the application of the operational tools used in electric circuit theory directly to the solution of mechanical and rheological problems without recourse to electromechanical analogies. Generalised respondance functions are defined from Q(s) e(s) = σ(s) and U(s) σ(s) = e(s) where Q(s) and U(s) are the (generalised) relaxance and retardance, functions and e(s) and σ(s) are the Laplace transforms of the shear strain and the shearing stress. The rheological model is regarded as part of a stress circuit diagram. Using the combination rules: relaxances add in parallel, retardances add in series, the respondance functions for any given model can be found immediately by applying the methods of “node analysis” to the stress circuit diagram. The relation of the respondance functions to the other methods for characterizing linear viscoelastic behaviour is discussed. These considerations lead to the definition of some new functions, the most important of which are the relaxation coefficient η(t) and the creep fluidity ϕ(t), the time-dependent analogues of the frequency-dependent complex viscosity η(w) and complex fluidity η(w). The paper is concluded by a demonstration of the usefulness of the respondance function method in the treatment of the mathematics of rheological apparatus.
