Summary

Electron microscopic studies were performed on the pancreatic islets of Chinese hamsters, Mongolian gerbils, spiny mice, as well as obese-hyperglycemic mice and their lean litter mates. Some of these animals were diabetic. Cilia were found in the parenchymal and vascular endothelial cells of the islets. Vesicular particles occurred in association with cilia in the islets of the Mongolian gerbil. The β-cells of some of the animals exhibited cytoplasmic tubular bodies, sometimes with a spatial relationship to mitochondria. Dense bodies with enclosed secretory granules were found in β-cells from all the species. The β-cell nuclei of some rodents contained rod-shaped structures. The significance of these findings is discussed.
