Summary
A chromatographic separation technique which employs a liquid ion exchanger made from a solution of a long chain amphiphilic polyelectrolyte dissolved in an organic solvent is described. The stationnary phase of the column was prepared by soaking porous glass beads (spherosils of 100–200 mesh and 10 m2/g specific surface area) in a solution of a salt of poly (N-octadecyl-4-vinylpyridinium) in N-octanol. The total exchange capacity was determined and the saturation and regeneration curves for a couple of NaBr, NaCl electrolytes are given and analysed. The elution graph of traces of NaBr using Na2SO4 as eluant are given for different elution rates and analysed on the bases of the “plate theory” of ion exchange elution partition chromatography. The chromatographic separation of a mixture of three halides NaBr, NaCl, NaI was performed. The advantages of employing amphiphilic polyelectrolytes as ionic carriers in achieving ion separation by liquid-liquid partition chromatography is emphasized by comparing the caracteristics of the liquid ion exchanger with those of the more common exchangers and with those of the next “pellicular” type ion exchangers.
