Summary
It is an established fact that a protective stabilization membrane is invariably formed at the interface during emulsification. The film being invisible, its thickness can be identified only by indirect methods. The thickness of the film has been calculated here from interfacial areas determined by size frequency analysis and it has been found to be of colloidal dimensions. While a special thickness of the film is a prerequisite of emulsion stability, there is lack of connection between the two properties, The varying strengths of the film are due to differences in surface tension ratios and not any other physical characteristic of the system. Although the permanence of an emulsion is determined by nature of the film, its other phyiscal characteristics and adsorption of the ions on the film resulting in electrical forces at the interface are the criteria which seem to have a direct bearing on emulsion stability.
