Summary
Nineteen rabbits were injected with131I-thyroxine and subjected to peritoneal dialysis with protein-free electrolyte solution (380 mOsm/L) every 12 to 18 minutes. One group of nine rabbits received electrolyte solution alone (20 times 100 to 150 ml), another group of ten rabbits received electrolyte solution (10 times) followed by undiluted bovine serum (10 times). The first group of rabbits showed 3.2% of the injected radioactivity in the 11th to 20th dialysis portions whereas 7.6% radioactivity was found in the corresponding portions of the second group of rabbits where bovine serum was used. In three rabbits of the second group, the radioactivity in the last dialysis fraction was 8–12 times higher than that in the corresponding fraction of the first group of rabbits. — In case peritoneal dialysis should be envisaged as a thereapeutic tool in thyrotoxic crises, it is suggested to use pooled serum, preferably from women on ovulation inhibitors, rather than electrolyte solution.
