Summary
1. 17α-Hydroxyprogesterone and progesterone were isolated from the hyperplastic adrenal glands of two patients with adrenogenital syndrome. In addition a substance resembling Δ4-androstene-3,17-dione has been extracted.
2. The major steroidal component of the UV-absorbing material at 240 mµ in these glands was 17α-hydroxyprogesterone (4.5 to 19.8 µg per g of wet tissue), followed by progesterone (1.2 to 12.5 µg per g of wet tissue).
3. It is concluded that 17α-hydroxyprogesterone is accumulated in the hyperplastic adrenal glands. This is further evidence for the assumption that lack of “C-21-hydroxylase” is one of the reasons for the inhibited biosynthesis of hydrocortisone in patients with adrenogenital syndrome due to adrenal hyperplasia.
