Summary

The glutathion peroxidase activity in erythrocytes reaches its normal level already from the 25th week of pregnancy. This level remains unchanged during the whole life. Our studies in cell populations with increased and decreased amount of reticulocytes show that activity of this enzyme does not decrease even in older erythrocytes. Other enzymes such as glutathion reductase, glucose-6-phosphat-dehydrogenase and 6-phospho-gluconatdehydrogenase which have close contact to the glutathion metabolism, and the whole amount of reduced glutathion are present in the same amount both in the erythrocytes of the fetus and in the full-term newborns. The increased fragility and the formation of Heinzbodies in the erythrocytes of the newborns could be due to the instability of thiolgroups in the erythrocyte membranes.
